Teeth discolour in two ways. Extrinsic stains come from tea, coffee, betel nut, zarda and smoking — much of this lifts with scaling and polishing. Intrinsic discolouration comes from age, medication (notably childhood tetracycline) or tooth structure, and needs bleaching.
Our options
In-office bleaching
Completed in a single visit. A protective barrier shields the gums, then a high-concentration hydrogen peroxide gel is applied and light-activated. Typically 2–4 shades lighter in 45–60 minutes.
Home bleaching (custom tray)
We take an impression and make a custom tray. You wear it with gel for a set time daily, usually 10–14 days. Slower, but longer-lasting and with less sensitivity.
Who it is not suitable for
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Under-16s
- Patients with crowns, veneers or large fillings on front teeth — artificial materials do not bleach, creating a colour mismatch
- Untreated decay or gum disease — these must be treated first
How long do results last?
Generally 6 months to 2 years. Continued betel, zarda or smoking brings stains back quickly. Rinsing after tea or coffee and regular scaling extend the result.
