Most dental problems are painless in their early stages. By the time pain begins, decay has usually reached deep into the tooth and treatment becomes more complex and more expensive. A routine check-up catches problems while they are still small.
What the examination covers
- Decay screening: every tooth surface and contact point is checked for early cavities.
- Gum health: swelling, bleeding and pocket formation are assessed — the earliest signs of periodontal disease.
- Digital X-ray (when needed): reveals decay, abscesses and bone loss that cannot be seen by eye.
- Oral cancer screening: the tongue, cheeks and soft tissues are examined for unusual ulcers or patches.
- Bite and alignment: how the upper and lower teeth meet, plus jaw joint condition.
How often should you come?
For healthy adults, once every six months is enough. More frequent visits (every 3–4 months) are advised for people with diabetes, smokers, patients wearing braces, pregnant women, and anyone with a history of gum disease.
Do not wait if you notice
- Sensitivity to hot or cold food
- Bleeding gums while brushing
- Persistent bad breath that brushing does not fix
- Visible dark spots or holes in a tooth
- Loose teeth or difficulty chewing
