Dental Implant

The permanent solution for a missing tooth — a titanium implant that looks and works like a natural tooth.

A dental implant is a small titanium screw placed in the jawbone that acts as an artificial tooth root. It fuses biologically with bone (osseointegration), so the crown fitted on top handles chewing forces like a natural tooth.

Treatment stages

  1. Assessment — X-ray, and CT if needed, to measure bone height and density.
  2. Placement — minor surgery under local anaesthesia, 45–90 minutes.
  3. Healing (3–6 months) — the implant integrates with bone. A temporary tooth can be provided.
  4. Abutment and crown — the connector is fitted and the permanent crown placed.

Who is suitable?

Generally healthy adults over 18 with adequate bone. Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking, untreated gum disease and certain bone medications (bisphosphonates) raise the risk. Where bone is insufficient, grafting can make implants possible. A full assessment decides.

Aftercare

Implants do not decay, but the surrounding gum and bone can become inflamed (peri-implantitis) — the leading cause of implant failure. Brush twice daily, clean between teeth, avoid smoking, and attend check-ups at least twice a year.

Frequently Asked Questions — Dental Implant

Is implant surgery painful?

No pain during surgery under local anaesthesia. Mild swelling and discomfort for 2–3 days afterwards is controlled with medication — many patients report it as easier than an extraction.

How long does the whole treatment take?

Usually 3–6 months from placement to final crown, because bone integration takes time. A temporary tooth can be worn meanwhile.

How much does an implant cost?

Typically ৳35,000–৳80,000 per tooth depending on the implant system, crown type and whether grafting is needed. Exact cost follows assessment.

Can diabetics get implants?

Yes if diabetes is well controlled (HbA1c within acceptable range). Uncontrolled diabetes carries a much higher risk of infection and failure, so it must be stabilised first.

How long do implants last?

With good care, 20+ years and often a lifetime. The crown on top may need replacing after 10–15 years.
